Otokar, a Koç Group company, maintained its sustainability performance this year. Otokar has been included in the BIST Sustainability Index for the fourth year in a row. Serdar Görgüç, Otokar General Manager said that Otokar is fully committed to the values and principles of Koç Group and acts strictly in accordance with environment friendly practices and universal business ethics, embracing people and the community, "We have completed another successful period with the activities we carried out in line with our goal of leaving a better and safer world to future generations. We reduced our energy consumption to 856 GJ and greenhouse gas emissions to 138 tons of CO2 with the projects we implemented. We recovered 149 thousand m3 of waste water and obtained 49 percent of the water we need for production from this recovery."
Otokar, Turkey's leading automotive and defense industry company, has been listed in the Borsa Istanbul (BIST) Sustainability Index for the fourth time. The sustainability activities of the company, which will be included in the BIST Sustainability Index in the November 2018 – October 2019 period, were evaluated on the basis of the "Index Selection Criteria" determined by Borsa İstanbul. Otokar, which aims to create long-term value by combining economic, environmental and social aspects with corporate governance principles, became one of the 50 companies included in the BIST Sustainability Index. As a member of the Koç Group, one of the largest and most successful groups in Turkey and in Europe, Otokar is strictly bound to the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact signed by the Group on March 30, 2006 and carries out its sustainability-related practices to this end. Otokar is also a signatory of UN Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) along with 30 Koç Group Companies.

Serdar Görgüç added that in the operations carried out by Otokar, which has been included in the BIST Sustainability Index for the fourth consecutive year, efforts to reduce environmental impact and combat climate change have increased and continued through the year: "We strive to provide a higher quality and safer life for future generations and to create added value for our stakeholders by focusing on innovation and sustainability. Serdar Görgüç, Otokar General Manager said that Otokar, which set off with the motivation of achieving what has not been done before at a time when industrialization was just getting started in Turkey, has today become a company with products and vehicles with fully owned intellectual property rights being used in more than 60 countries in five continents, "Every year we continue to invest in our Sakarya plant, spread on 552 thousand square meters of land, and our future. For the last decade, we have allocated 4 percent of our revenues for R&D to design state-of-the-art vehicles. As a continuation of this strategy, our R&D expenditure in 2017 is 5.9 percent of our revenues. The laboratories in our R&D Test Center also serve as an independent accreditation center for different sectors. Thus far, the number of applications that Otokar has filed for patents, utility models and industrial designs in the last decade has reached 269."
SMART VEHICLE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES GAIN MOMENTUM
Otokar focuses on developing technologies with "smart and low-emission vehicle" design, which is vital for meeting public transportation needs of the smart cities of the future. Otokar, which manufactured Turkey's first electric bus and is currently working on buses powered by alternative fuels, is also among the stakeholders of the international Appstacle Cloud-Based Smart Vehicle Application Project, launched during the reporting period and slated for completion in 2019.
Görgüç also stated that Otokar provides thousands of hours of training each year to further develop the employees' current qualifications and added that the trainings amounted to 73,466 personxhours for development of professional knowhow and skills, and 18,288 personxhours to improve OHS culture within the organization. Görgüç noted that the company continued to support community development with social responsibility activities carried out through the year.
Otokar's 2017 Sustainability Report was prepared in accordance with the requirements of GRI Standards: Core option by considering the social, environmental and economic impacts of the company's operations, governance approach, performance results and future perspectives.
